FLASHBACK FRIDAY: THE TOMB OF CYRUS THE GREAT
In the vast valley of Pasargadae there stands this simple tomb with nothing around it for miles and miles. It has been like this for many centuries, for it entombs the founder of Persia, Cyrus the Great (600-530BC). Revered as the liberator of the Jews from their Babylonian captivity in 539 BC, hailed by Herodotus for his humanity and wisdom, this small structure symbolizes the humility of an extraordinary man. Yet the tomb is a structure of engineering genius, the oldest built on principles of base-isolation withstanding the countless earthquakes Persia has suffered for the last 2500 years.
I was first here in 1973 when Persia (renamed Iran in 1933) flourished under the Shah. Here I am in 2014, when everyone I met expressed admiration for America and their contempt for the mullah tyranny they endured. I hope to return once more when the Land of Cyrus will be free again. HALF-FULL REPORT 04/22/22
Yes, my son Brandon was in Ukraine. Just as a Captain in the Marine Corps he was in Afghanistan protecting Afghans from Taliban terror, now he is protecting Ukrainians from Russian terror.
Last week, he took President Trump’s last Secretary of Defense, Chris Miller, to Kiev, meeting with President Zelensky’s top generals. Subsequently, Brandon and Chris were interviewed on the Jordan Harbinger podcast.
The podcast is 90 minutes long, which you can listen to via the link under the graphic above. While there are lighter moments, like Brandon taking Harbinger aback telling him how his father once beat Putin in arm-wrestling, it is a serious discussion as befits an existential struggle between good and evil.
There are no words to express how proud I am of my son Brandon.

HOW AMERICA BECAME LA-LA LAND
America these last 14 months resembles a dystopia. It is becoming partly the world of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, partly the poet Homer’s land of the Lotus-Eaters.
Nothing seems to be working. And no one in control seems to care.
What explains an America that suddenly no longer works? Here are three reasons.
THE ISLAND OF SARK
There are five Channel Islands in the English Channel. Best known are Guernsey and Jersey. Least visited is Alderney, along with tiny Herm. Most fascinating is Sark, Europe’s only remaining feudal fiefdom. No motor vehicles are allowed, excepting a few farmers’ small tractors. The governor and chief constable is called the Seneschal. He rides to his office on his bicycle.
It’s an ancient office with a tradition of many centuries. When I was there in 2010, it was held by Reginald Guille, a very friendly fellow as all Sarkese are. We rode our bikes around the island, even along La Coupée, the connecting path along the razor sharp high isthmus connecting two parts of the island – it’s pictured above.
There are gorgeous pocket beaches here, and beautiful natural swimming pools. Flower gardens are everywhere, the island could not be safer, cleaner, calmer, and more exquisitely charming. A few days here will do wonders for you. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #131 Photo ©Jack Wheeler)
I’M DONE TALKING
Nance told Reid that he joined the International Legion of Territorial Defense in Ukraine.
"The more I saw of the war going on, the more I thought, I'm done talking. It's time to take action here. So, about a month ago, I joined the international legion here in Ukraine, and I am here to help this country fight, you know, what essentially is a war of extermination."
WHY ARE WOMEN UNHAPPY?
A little over a decade ago, two researchers at Wharton published a paper showing that, despite women’s increasing work and educational opportunities, their self-reported happiness was in steady decline. Back in 1970, women were on average happier than men; they are now less happy than men.
Broadly, since 1970, everyone has gotten more miserable. But the decline in women’s overall happiness has outpaced men’s, and the happiness curve inverted sometime in the early 1990s. The paper also documents increasing anxiety and neuroticism, as well as decreasing social cohesion among women.
The researchers couldn’t come up with a good explanation for their observations. So here’s mine:
Maybe women don’t want to fill traditionally male roles. Is it conceivable (or is it inconceivable) that women have traditionally lived a certain way and derived happiness from certain things not because they were weak and forced into it by men, but because that is what they actually preferred?
PANTELLERIA’S MIRROR OF VENUS
Between Sicily and Tunisia in the Mediterranean lies a secret hideaway of Europe’s rich and famous – the small Italian island of Pantelleria. Peaceful and quiet, the opposite of glitzy places like Ibiza, wealthy elite retreat here in luxurious yet very understated villas to get away from it all. It helps that the shoreline is all volcanic rock cliffs, which dissuades hordes of African “migrants” attempted to claim “asylum” in the EU welfare state by landing here.
The most beautiful spot on Pantelleria is this volcano crater lake known as “The Mirror of Venus” – of such magic color that, the legend goes, the goddess Venus would admire herself in its reflection. Come here for a tranquil escape of your own. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #164 photo ©Jack Wheeler)
UKRAINE AND THE END OF RUSSIA
Russia’s impending doom is a driving force to invading Ukraine.
For centuries, Russia’s rulers have thought Russia’s border regions are indefensible. There are few geographic barriers to block potential invasion, forcing the Russians with their dwindling numbers to attempt to defend massive stretches of territory.
What barriers the Russians do have now — Crimea and the Caucasus come to mind — are only because of the sort of strategic adventurism that Putin is now threatening to Ukraine as a whole.
There is a method to the madness. To paraphrase Catherine the Great, Russia can expand, or Russia can die. Today, that means Russia is going to die.

THE LAND OF THE DRAGON’S BLOOD TREE
This is the Dragon’s Blood Tree, Dracaena cinnabari. It can be found in only one place on earth, a remote island called a Lost World for its uniqueness, the “most alien-looking place on our planet.”
Although it’s known as the most alien, strangest, weirdest, and bizarre place you can go to, it’s also completely safe and incredibly beautiful. Anybody who comes here returns saying, “You have to see it to believe it.” What is this place?
It’s the World Heritage Site of the island of Socotra, the “Galapagos of the Indian Ocean,” 240 miles off the coast of Yemen and now secured by the UAE. It’s hidden, remote, and far away.
We were there in 2014, and it’s been almost impossible to get to ever since. But we’ll be back next April of 2023. Let me know if you’d like to be with us. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #34 Photo ©Jack Wheeler)
KEEPING YOUR SANITY WITH TIME WELL SPENT

Time present and time past Are both perhaps present in time future, And time future contained in time past. - TS Eliot, Burnt Norton
Time is a continuous, objectively measurable forward movement. We measure it with the rotation of the earth, the orbit of the earth about the sun, and the tilt of her axis relative to that sun as we make our way about it, seen through the changing seasons.
While the mechanics of time in a basic way are well understood, our experience of time and our relationship to time is complex, and can hold the key to our experience of life itself.
Phil Zimbardo, Professor Emeritus of Stanford and author of "The Time Cure describes 6 different time orientations. Our happiness is dependent to a large degree on our relationship to these 6 different time orientations (you can take the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory here).
THE DANCING FOREST ON THE CURONIAN SPIT
The Curonian Spit is a 60 mile-long and skinny stretch of sand separating the 625 square-mile Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. It is jointly shared by Lithuania and Kaliningrad. The trees of one section of the pine forests covering the spit are weirdly twisted and distorted by some unknown force of nature. Their bizarre undulations have earned it the sobriquet, “The Dancing Forest.” It’s one of the as-yet unexplained mysteries of life on our planet, and a wondrous one to see. FLASHBACK FRIDAY – THE LOST CITY OF KUELAP
10,000 feet high in the Amazon cloud forests of northern Peru is a mysterious lost city built by an unknown people many centuries before the Incas existed. Known as Kuelap by villagers in the lowlands below, the Incas called the people who built it Chachapoyas, “Cloud Warriors.” I led an expedition here in 1994, climbing high up into the Amazon Andes to come upon gigantic stone walls 60 feet high surrounding hundreds of stone structures. Here you see Rebel among them. We’ll be here again in a year or two in another exploration of Peru. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #153, photo ©Jack Wheeler)
HALF-FULL REPORT 04/15/22
On the first day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, February 24, the 19 Ukrainian soldiers stationed on the tiny Black Sea islet of Snake Island were ordered to surrender by a Russian warship – their response made world headlines. On March 14, Ukraine commemorated their heroism by issuing a postage stamp of a Snake Island soldier presenting the bird to the warship:
But the real payback came a few minutes past midnight night before last (4/14). Does that ship in the stamp look familiar? It should, for you likely have seen photos of it all over the internet now. Yes, it’s (or was) Russia’s Black Sea Fleet flagship Moskva now lying on the ocean floor with its captain and hundreds of its crew.
Here’s the story of how this happened…
Now, no peeking, but there’s a mind-blow Easter surprise in this HFR that’s a genuine personal life-saver. So read on.

THE DECISIVE MOMENT IN UKRAINE
“FREEDOM MUST BE ARMED BETTER THAN TYRANNY” --Volodymyr Zelensky
The relatively brief but bloody war in Ukraine is entering its fourth and possibly decisive phase. For those of us born after World War II, this is the most consequential war of our lifetime. Upon its outcome rests the future of European stability and prosperity.
The Russian military—revealed as inept at tactics, unimaginative in operational design, obtuse in strategy, and incompetent at basic logistics and maintenance—can do only two things well: vomit out massive amounts of firepower and brutalize civilians.
Putin and his senior advisers, as stewards of a military that cannot adequately care for its wounded and that abandons its dead, don’t care about the human price they are paying. And so Putin will order offensives that, if confronted by a well-resourced Ukrainian foe, can effectively destroy his own army.
The challenge for the West is to ensure that this is its fate.
SLOVENIA’S VINTGAR GORGE
In a hidden corner of Europe, the Radovna River pours off the Julian Alps to carve out the Vintgar Gorge with crystal clear water. A mile-long walkway with towering limestone cliffs on either side is your access.
Nearby is the gorgeous Lake Bled, with Bled Castle suspended atop a shoreline cliff. The medieval village of Piran, built on a spit of land projecting into the Adriatic Sea and encircled by a white sand beach is a short drive away. Ljubljana is one of Europe’s most utterly charming capital cities.
Most people have only heard of Slovenia as the birthplace of First Lady Melania Trump, but those who have been here understand it is one of the most entrancing countries on the European continent – pristine beauty, spotless environment, friendly and hospitable people, safe and very well-run. Whenever your next visit to Europe may be, try to include a few days or week or so here. You’ll never run out of fascinating things to do. A stroll through the Vintgar Gorge is an example out of so many. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #19 photo ©Jack Wheeler)
THE BEAUTY OF BANGLADESH
Most people consider Bangladesh a basket case country – all crowded overpopulated poverty constantly flooding etc. Yet I found it to be extraordinarily beautiful. The Shuvalong Falls here is just one example. It’s in the Chittagong Hills near the border with Burma. You’ll find Hindu shrines, massive mountain top Buddhist temples, small Moslem mosques, and a Christian church in almost every village
The charming main town of Rangamati is bustling with friendly energy. A boat ride on serene Kaptai Lake is soul-soothing. Everyone has a smile for you. It’s a place of captivating serendipity. A wonderful experience you might want for yourself. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #154, photo ©Jack Wheeler)
UKRAINE HAS JOINED NATO WHETHER RUSSIA LIKES IT OR NOT
Last Thursday (4/07), the NATO foreign ministers met in an emergency session about Russia’s increasingly horrific and atrocity-filled invasion of Ukraine. However, unlike most NATO meetings, this one was substantive. The main issue on the table was weaponry. Quantity, quality, and purpose were all concerns. To date, the weaponry supplied to Ukraine has been defensive.
No more. Game-changing weapons began to flow to Ukraine immediately after the meeting.
Further, the attendees were not only NATO nations; there were also observers present: the European Union, Sweden, Finland, Georgia, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and Ukraine. If Putin was afraid of being surrounded before, he should take a quick look at his map now.
A very insightful statement came from Ukraine Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba: “I think the deal that Ukraine is offering is fair. You give us weapons, we sacrifice our lives, and the war is contained in Ukraine.”
All of the actions taken by NATO countries indicate they have agreed to Mr. Kuleba’s deal.
TO SECURE THE BORDER, TEXAS GOV GREG ABBOTT SHOULD SHUT IT DOWN
Title 42 is the last remaining tool the federal government has to control record-high levels of illegal immigration. Every other policy the Trump administration implemented to secure the border has been rescinded or neutered by Biden, and on May 23, Title 42 will be gone too.
What’s coming, in other words, is a border surge of historic and almost unimaginable proportions, and it is happening as a direct result of Biden’s policy choices. The crisis about to unfold is 100 percent avoidable, and 100 percent Biden’s fault.
If Abbott were serious about securing the border, he wouldn’t announce a plan to transport migrants to Washington but a plan to take them back to Mexico -- immediamente. Here’s how he can.
AFRICAN FLATDOGS
Here in Zambia and elsewhere in Africa, crocodiles are nicknamed “Flatdogs.” You can see why. They spend much of their lives lying flat on the mud bank of a pond or river. Yet when on the hunt they can attack with astounding speed and surprise, leaping unseen from muddy water upon an unsuspecting target twenty feet away in an instant. This happened to a young boy fishing along the Luangwa River near our encampment just days ago. Africa is unforgiving of the unwary. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #142 Photo ©Jack Wheeler)
BACK TO THE DUCHY OF MUSCOVY
Back in the 1990s, I wrote Back to the Duchy of Muscovy, describing how the centuries of Russia’s relentless expansion from the small area around Moscow to a geographical behemoth – see A Short History of Russia – may well work in reverse.
A relentless shrinking would occur, I surmised, with one region after another breaking apart from the Kremlin’s grasp if Russia did not embrace freedom and democracy but continued its authoritarian ways after the extinction of the Soviet Union.
Alas, my Back to… article is gone with the wind of a quarter-century ago. Then along comes Sergej Sumlenny, a Russian scholar of Russia’s history with its conquered people and neighbors. Here is a spectacularly informative YouTube interview of him explaining how Russia could soon be on its way back to the Duchy of Muscovy. Enjoy!
RUSSIA IS A FAKE POWER
Winston Churchill famously called Russia "a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma." A more accurate description of the current Russian Federation is a forgery wrapped in a deception inside a lie.
Numerous analysts have focused on Moscow’s campaign of disinformation to undermine the West, but they have barely noticed that the most important subject of disinformation is Russia itself. Moscow has a long record of deceiving Westerners and depicting its empire as invincible.
In a previous imperial incarnation, Soviet communism and socialist internationalism were supposed to ensure salvation for all humanity. Until, that is, they were exposed as a fraud. Today’s Russia has created an image of great power status, economic strength, and military power that is rapidly unraveling in Ukraine. This is revealing that the Russian state structure itself stands on rotting foundations.
KEEPING YOUR SANITY BY KNOWING WHAT MATTERS TO YOU
Changing behavior, learning new skills, overcoming personal limitations, all take consciousness, time and willpower.
Willpower works like a muscle: it strengthens with use over time, but it also takes energy. When our reserves get depleted – through fatigue, hunger, or overuse – it can weaken. But what if we have to do things anyway?
I think we’ve all been there at some point, and somehow we rise to the occasion. How can this be when our willpower is spent? What makes the difference?
What it all comes down to is that we care enough. Big things can happen when something matters enough to us.
COURTSHIP IN THE GALAPAGOS
The male Magnificent Frigatebird has a flap of loose bright red skin on his neck called a “gular sac.” During mating season, they huff and puff, filling it with air to blow it up like a balloon. They then parade around showing off for the ladies, for the bigger the red balloon, the more the ladies are aroused. Size matters, even in the Galapagos.
This is only one of many courtship displays among the birds and animals of these extraordinary islands. No wonder the Galapagos are called “evolution’s laboratory.” (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #199 photo ©Jack Wheeler)
ARE YOU A GROOMER?
Do you talk about sex with 5-year-olds behind their parents' back?
- Do you begin sentences with, "Don't tell your parents, but..."
- Do you encourage kids to cut off their sex organs?
- Are you a Disney Executive?
- Did you quit your teaching job after they passed the Parental Rights Act in Florida?
- Does taking other people's kids to a drag show and calling it a "field trip" seem ok to you?
- Are you now, or have you ever been, a politician?
- Have you ever helped a child acquire sex hormones without their parent's knowledge?
- Does David French think you're a "blessing of liberty”?
Tally up your number of "Yes" answers and consult this chart:
1-2: Oh no! You're a groomer!
3-4: Wow. Definitely a groomer.
5-6: Yep, still groomer.
7-8: There's a Law & Order SVU episode with your name on it.
9: Ok, we're calling the police.
FLASHBACK FRIDAY – THE CRUSADER FORTRESS IN THE CAUCASUS
This is the fortress town of Shatili in an extremely remote Caucasus region in Georgia called Khevsureti. It was built by the Crusaders 1,000 years ago. The Khevsur people who live here trace their ancestry back to these Crusaders and until the 1930s still wore chain mail in feud-battles with other towns. I took this picture in 1991.
American traveler Richard Halliburton (1900–1939) saw and recorded the customs of the Khevsurs in 1935. The Khevsur men, dressed in chain mail and armed with broadswords, wore garments full of decoration made up of crosses and icons. They don’t do that anymore, but they proudly retain their Crusader Christian heritage – for Georgia adopted Christianity in the 4th century AD. HALF-FULL REPORT 04/08/22
The Russian soldiers who did this to five innocent civilian Ukrainians, two men, two women, one child, can no longer be considered human, but subhuman barbarian monsters. Their goal – now a common sentiment expressed by many Russians on the Internet – is the complete physical extinction of the Ukrainian people.
Their Final Solution for Ukraine is the same as Nazi Germany’s for the Jews. Denial of one is just as morally depraved as denial of the other.
Survivors of the Bucha Massacre remain in a state of shock with no answer to their question, “Why do the Russians hate us so much?” It may be an unanswerable question just as why did the Nazi Germans hate Jews so much. Right now the answer doesn’t matter. All that matters is the defeat of such genocidal insanity.
For it’s not just Bucha – it’s what’s found in any place liberated by Ukrainian forces from Russian occupation.
THE NIHILIST OMELETTE OF THE LEFT
The last 14 months have offered one of the rare occasions in recent American history when the hard Left has operated all the levers of federal government. The presidency, the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the permanent bureaucratic state are all in progressive hands.
And the result is a disaster that is uniting Americans in their revulsion of elitists whose crazy ideas are tearing apart the fabric of the country.
In pursuit of its nihilist utopian omelet, the Left cares little about the millions of middle-class Americans it must break to make it.
The result is an unmitigated disaster that not only has tarred the Democrat Party, corrupted once-revered agencies, and alienated half the country from our cultural institutions, but now endangers the very health and security of the United States.
AGIOS LAZAROS
We’re all familiar with the miracle of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead four days after his entombment in John 11:1-44. But what happened to Lazarus afterwards – what did he do with the rest of his (second) life?
He left Judea to live on the island of Cyprus. There he met Paul the Apostle and his evangelizing partner Barnabas who was a Cypriot. They appointed him the first Bishop of Kition (present day Lanarca), where he lived for another 30 years, then upon his second death was buried for the last time.
A church was built over his marble sarcophagus which has undergone many resurrections itself over the last two millennia. But here it stands today after all those ravages of time, Agios Lazaros, the Church of St. Lazarus, over his still-preserved sarcophagus. On every Lazarus Saturday (eight says before Easter), an icon of St. Lazarus is taken in procession through the streets of Lanarca. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #165 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

PROOF FROM THE WHITE HOUSE THAT BIDENS PRESIDENCY IS OVER
In fact, it left me with an admittedly wild theory about how Obama may intend to fix things: Obama’s aiming to get back into the Oval Office. Here’s how he can do it, without violating the 22nd Amendment. There are three steps to return Obama to the presidency:
THE MORAL COLLAPSE OF MITT ROMNEY
Mitt Romney is thoroughly damaged by Trump derangement. This has been evident for a long time over the last four years, but his vote to confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson is a bridge too far.
For a man of the Mormon faith to accept a judge who is perennially partial to purveyors of child pornography is incomprehensible. How does a man with five sons and twenty-four grandchildren suffer from the same Woke blind spot as Judge Jackson?
Romney's purported religious faith must be fake; if it were real and true, he would be unable to vote to confirm Jackson.
NEGOTIABLE AFFECTION IN SKAGWAY
When gold was discovered in the Klondike of Canada’s Yukon in 1896, the fastest way to get there was a tiny hamlet at the end of a long inlet of Alaska’s Inland Passage coast called Skagway. By 1898, Skagway was a lawless Wild West boomtown flooded with prospectors who needed entertainment and release from the arduous travails of gold searching – and ladies who would provide it for a price.
The Brass Pic (as in a miner’s pic & shovel) was one of many Houses of Negotiable Affection in Skagway that flourished until the gold panned out in 1900. It’s preserved as a museum today in fond memory of those days of commercially consensual delight. Skagway is a terrific place to experience, drawing over a million visitors a year. Come here to see what draws them. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #198 photo ©Jack Wheeler)
A RED TSUNAMI NEEDS AN AMERICA FIRST PLAN
America has had enough of the disastrous leftist policies of the Biden Administration. We must return to America First policies.
After American voters clean Biden’s Democrat henchmen out of the United States House of Representatives in November’s elections, they will want to see action on the part of incoming Republicans.
It isn’t enough for Republicans to remind voters that Democrats have lost their soul as a party. Republicans must have an affirmative, positive platform that can be implemented. The plan must enact real policy changes while rolling back Biden’s harmful initiatives.
We need an America First Plan, a new contract with America. Our America First Plan must contain three sections: a brief assertion of positive policy initiatives—with legislation ready to go, a plan of how to achieve the objectives, and a list of the oversight actions that Republicans will take when we control committees.
“OK, GROOMER”
The spectacle of America’s cultural elite uniting to defend the propriety of child porn in school libraries, insisting that a gender ideology they had not even heard about until seven years ago must be taught to seven-year-olds, and a presidential administration publicly celebrating the breast amputation, genital mutilation, and sterilization of autistic children, should be utterly appalling to anyone with a shred of human decency.
This all has led some on the Right to finally try to do what the Left always does: coin a novel political epithet.
You’ve heard the catch-all dismissal insult of young know-nothings of any advocacy of normality by older people – “OK, Boomer”? Well, how about we turn some tables with a catch-all dismissal of what the Left is trying to do with our children – “OK, Groomer”?
DEAD VLEI, NAMIBIA
Many consider this the most surrealistic place on earth. The clarity of the air turns the sky deep cobalt blue, the dunes are so old they’ve rusted red, combining with the white clay floor to give the skeletal trees a scene out of a Dali painting or a science fiction movie. But it’s real.
A thousand years ago the river watering these trees dried up, leaving a white clay pan amidst red sand dunes almost as tall as the Empire State Building. It’s so dry here these acacia trees can’t decompose, their skeletons standing scorched in the sun for ten centuries.
Dead Vlei is in a region of enormous dunes called Sossusvlei. It’s a mind-boggling experience to float over Sossusvlei in a hot air balloon. Namibia, in fact, is full of such experiences – the largest fur seal colony anywhere at Cape Cross, the marvelous abundance of African wildlife at the Etosha Pan, the dramatic shipwrecks dotting the Skeleton Coast, traditional people living untouched by the modern world like the Himbas.
Plus it’s one of the safest and best-run countries in all Africa – certainly worth consideration for your bucket list. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #47 photo ©Jack Wheeler)
KEEPING YOUR SANITY BY KNOWING HOW TO WORRY EFFECTIVELY
Anticipating events to come so that we can take effective action is invaluable. But worry is a different animal. Worrying is ruminating about the future. In the same way that we can get stuck and helpless in painful memories from the past, worry is a passive, helpless stance in relation to events that may happen in the future; and it drains us of the energy and spirit to act effectively where we can.
So let’s take a step beyond Bob Marley’s advice to just “be happy” (while that’s a good first step!) and talk about how to take effective action when worrying.
