BASIC MAKE-READY FOR URBAN UNREST: PART TWO

urban-unrest-2For the first part of this series, click here.

We are going more into tactics, techniques, and procedures here.

Know when to “dial up” and “dial down”  when bad people disturb your peace.   First, there is the rowdy street protest where occasional assaults and vandalism might occur, and then the other end of the spectrum, such as an October 7th style terror attack.

Just recently, people were celebrating the murder of a healthcare CEO and calling for the murder of Daniel Penny following his acquittal by a jury.   Every situation is different—risks, opportunities, and what happens when/if you get caught; either by the authorities or others.

I know the recent election of Donald Trump may have, in the minds of some, limited the chances of this going as badly as I am writing about.  Just remember the enemy has had decades to load their people into the system that we are trying to reform, and we hope Trump can fix this—but it’s not yet proven.  We missed four years of Kamala and gigantic rear ends being shaken in our faces by less than five percent of the vote!

To be clear, I do not advise you to break any laws, nor condone your doing so; you have places like Texas and places like Taxachussetts, and what is a felony in one state may be innocent fun in another.  You will have to decide what you ought/need to do and can do to stay alive.  There are consequences for every choice.

It is said that it’s better to be judged by twelve than carried by six, and laws and how they are enforced vary from location to location.  For anyone who thinks I am being dramatic, look at what just happened in Syria.  It could happen here.  Use this information as you need to, if only to avoid having to.

So let’s discuss surviving when you can’t just break contact and run.

We will assume this means dealing with a violent mob.   When you engage a mob, they will (1) counterattack (2) flee, or (3) hold back trying to decide what to do next or film you (expect number one to follow again).  They will have people advising them.

Remember that the state may support them.  They cannot attack what they cannot see or find, so the harder you make yourself to see or locate, the better the chance they will get distracted and decide you aren’t worth it.

You need to get off of the X and get to a position of safety or advantage if you can; whether that is a block away or an entire U.S. state away.  For those of you who realize that this needs to be planned in advance, give yourselves yet another sticker.

If you run, you may be chased, possibly to get the government to attack you, or for them to attack you.  If chasing you gets them shot, in a booby-trap, or otherwise engaged too, they may back off.

If you can hide the attacker you just disposed of and no one sees them (or you), this may be the time to break contact.  Throw the body in a ditch or empty room or cover it with debris, or even keep them with you till it’s safe to push them off.

Keep running until you have nothing to run from, or cannot run any longer, regardless.  That is the whole point here.

If you are in this fight, you are in trouble.  Forget that heroic music playing in your head.

Many of these thugs have military experience or have been trained by people that have been “downrange.”  Only in the movies does the lone, admirable hero tune up a legion of bad guys single-handedly in an hour and a half.

The special operations forces you hear great stories about work in teams (if you catch the hint, your sticker collection grows).

Many crooks are used to violence and pain and have a dysfunctional value system that inculcates short-term thinking, ego, and narcissism.

Many are emotional, reactionary, and selfish—and will happily go after you and your stuff in a group.

Many use drugs, and will be encouraged to by their handlers to make them more violent.  After all, they’re expendable.

Early warning Have an emergency radio and know if the area you are in has a potential to develop into a site for violence.  Watch the news.

Major monuments, universities, controversial industries, blighted urban areas, large religious sites, sites of police incidents, and such merit careful monitoring.

To stay out of trouble, don’t be there to begin with.

Be a grey man One option when you are surrounded by a mob is to try to blend in with them long enough to escape.

Look at them and how they are acting, and ask if you can pull that one off—without becoming a target for someone.  Proper dress will be essential.  Recent episodes of civil unrest globally have been multiracial.

Dress.  Don’t wear distinct clothing or synthetics, which can burn.  MAGA hats might not work.   At least with COVID now you can wear a mask without anyone looking.  Some military camouflage face paint might improve that.

Have a change of clothing, so you can change your appearance rapidly to escape and evade.   A shemagh makes a good all-purpose scarf that will hide your facial and head features, or get a purpose-made mask you can pocket.

Get some hats.  Shave or avoid distinctive beards, haircuts, or mustaches.  Ladies, cutting your hair is a quick appearance change might make you harder to identify, or have some head covers.

Wear good running shoes.  Roofing and construction gloves with plastic knuckles will protect your hands from the heads of people that run into them and you won’t rust surfaces with your fingerprints and DNA.

Cover.  If you are in a vehicle or building that can be secured, you might stay put.  If you can drive out of danger, even better.

You may have to run into people or over them and will probably be dared to do so by aggressive mob members, as their anarchist education will truthfully tell them most people are too humane to squish them.

It’s the moment of truth.  Will you drive through them, or risk being smashed out of your car and killed, or burned?

If you are being attacked here,  DO NOT let them stop you and DO NOT let them get into the car or get you out of it.

Concealment Surveillance is becoming ubiquitous.  Streets and businesses worldwide are loaded up with cameras.

Cellphone towers are everywhere and recording your tablet, computer, and phone signal’s location and history to within feet while they hack you.  Thermal imaging sights and cameras are hard to hide from.

And technology such as Wide Area Motion Imagery is able to put an airborne camera over a city or large area that can watch everything going on down below all of the time and record it back—in addition to zooming in on specific targets as needed.  Kyle Rittenhouse was probably filmed this way.

It is going to be very, very hard to hide your activities during an urban riot supported by the Deep State and the various global actors.  There are some limits still:  These systems cannot see through cover and concealment (thermal CAN see through smoke), and seeing a person and identifying them are two separate things.

Switching clothing, license plates, vehicles, vehicle cargo and features, and just remaining in or under some sort of cover as much as possible may help to hinder some of the cameras from gathering useful data on you.

This data is getting fused by the security and intelligence services of the world.  Although driving a vehicle without a plate (or a fake one) is illegal, you might rather risk that than being identified by the rioters you just smoked.  I say again, choose.

Don’t forget about your toll tags, access card histories, and other conveniences that give up your time and location to investigators;  deny the enemy as much info as possible.

Avoid speaking to people, using your name or others’ names, or using identification.

Be able to improvise weapons.   Get a sturdy handkerchief or sock and a weight.  By wrapping one in the other, you can improvise a remarkably effective flail club.   The raw materials can be carried around low-key until time to use them.

A good can full of foaming wasp killer or a similar aerosol can be aimed at the face of a bad guy.   Common tools can be weapons.  Make sure it’s not more likely to hurt you instead.

Leave the improvised explosives book alone.   Get caught with your dangerous infernal device you took precious time to make and it’s automatically a major crime.

Only the official military ones are reliable, and will you send it back for a refund or give a negative Amazon review?   That’s if you don’t burn or blow yourself up.

If you are qualified to handle demolitions, you will know it.

If you make noise, try to reduce or mask it.  Putting a pillow between your muzzle and a target can muffle the report, but beware of jams.

Same with shooting into the mouth of a plastic bottle in contact with a target.  A favorite trick of urban snipers is to shoot through a hole in a wall while strategically opening doors and windows elsewhere in the building to make it sound like the shot is coming from somewhere else.

Jam a scarf in the mouth of a noisy bad person you are negotiating with.

Throwing out firecrackers during a hit is common in Mexico, and rioters love fireworks too.

Have access to a vehicle Remember, tires can be destroyed and engines put out of action; either yours, or your opponent’s vehicles.  (In Texas, possession of a tire deflation device is illegal.  Again, make your choices….)

If you are mobile and the rioters are on foot, advantage to you.

Stay focused on survival.  When you are fighting a homicidal mob, you do not accept interference and must put down the next one that challenges your escape or survival as readily as the first contestant.

Tossing away or destroying weapons and evidence may open you to destruction of evidence charges, but this beats death.

No fighting fair.  Do not use barehanded fighting techniques unless there is no other option.  Use your weapons; professionals NEVER fight fair.  Pepper spray, club, knife, or gun.

You don’t have the time or endurance to fist fight a whole mob.  While you are occupied with one, three or four more might be closing in.

When you break your wrist, fingers, or arm in the fight, now you are injured and your survival chances just plunged further; now you can’t drive, climb, shoot a firearm, or do anything else well, and good luck finding a doctor; the police will be monitoring the hospitals, too.

If you noticed that link in the middle of this paragraph… another sticker.  Take a first aid course or study it.

Again, be honest with yourself.  If you are a small or elderly person, you might not be able to last in a fight on a good day against even one thug.  You must have overmatch.

And lastly, every second you spend letting the mob or an attacker dictate your actions is putting you in more and more peril of getting surrounded or worn down.

Be the cause of an effect and make the mob react to YOUYou must follow your plan to escape or survive versus reacting to other people.

Communications.  The cellphone you are carrying is your worst enemy when the balloon goes up; to include anything else in your life that can film you or give away your location on GPS.

It records your speech, position, direction, and speed 24/7; convincing everyone to carry one of these to the point of actual dependency is one of the bigger intelligence coups the world has seen recently.

Anything that you cannot get away from in this category or do without goes in a Faraday bag.   Most modern phones cannot be “turned off.”

I suggest getting some radios amongst you and your partners and setting up a simple code system using a signal sheet to be used if you don’t want anyone listening in.

I recommend you have old fashioned maps to get around.   Test your radios.  In urban terrain particularly, they will sometimes not transmit well.  In buildings, all bets are off.

Also, communication need not be electronic or even audible.  You might leave flags, objects, or lights on or curtains open to communicate.  Use your imagination.

We will finalize Part Three of this series with the worst of the worst-case; another article discussing what happens if you, ultimately, have to stand and fight, and some further material on tactics.
