What George Wallace and "Bull" Connor would have decried as "miscegenation" is commonplace in America today.

Ten percent of all married couples in 2010 were interracial, a 28 percent increase since 2000, according to the Census Bureau. There were 157,000 interracial married couples in 1960, 5.4 million in 2010.

Nine million Americans reported being of mixed race, a 32 percent increase over 2000.

At one time or another, all but 9 states (Alaska, Connecticut, Hawaii, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Vermont and Wisconsin) had laws forbidding mixed race marriages.  We’ve come a long way in half a century.  But there are still racists among us.  Especially among regressive liberals.  Call what they espouse Regressive Racism.

"I’ve never experienced so much hate, ever, in my life," actress Tamera Mowry, choking back tears, told Oprah Winfrey about the comments she’s received on social media since her marriage to Fox News correspondent Adam Housley.

"White man’s whore," was one, she recalled.  "Back in the day, you cost $300, but now, you’re giving it away for free."

Ms. Mowry’s father is white, her mother is black.  Mr. Housely is white.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas married Virginia Lamp, who is white, because "he couldn’t paint himself white," said USA Today columnist Barbara Reynolds

Former University of California Regent Ward Connerly opposes racial quotas because "he’s married to a white woman," said California State Sen. Diane Watson.  "He doesn’t want to be black."

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is a "cornball brother," only "kind of black," because his fiancee (Rebecca Liddicoat, now his wife) is white, said ESPN analyst Rob Parker.

It wasn’t their choice of spouses that bothered the bigots most.

"These racist bastards are ticked because (Tamera Mowry) isn’t doing/saying what they want her to say," her husband said.

Actress Stacey Dash was called an "oreo" (and worse), received death threats after she endorsed Mitt Romney for president.

His real beef with RGIII is that he might be a Republican, Rob Parker indicated.

"The names they use to describe us say it all: Race Traitor, Uncle Tom, Oreo, Pet Monkey, among others," said a college student who blogs as "Race Traitor."  "The message is clear: "You cannot be both a Conservative and Black." You are forced to pick between your beliefs and your race.

"It’s an absurd thing, especially when you consider who it comes from," he said. "The people who claim to champion tolerance and free thought are the very same ones who become so outraged whenever someone dares to think differently."

Race traitor.  That’s how segregationists described whites who supported equal rights for blacks.  Now it’s how regressive liberal racists describe conservative blacks.

Among those who’ve been called this and other nasty names for expressing unapproved thoughts are  former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, famous neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson,  former Saratoga Springs, Utah Mayor Mia Love, former Reps. Allen West, R-Fla, Gary Franks, R-Conn, and Artur Davis, D-Ala, and former Maryland LtGov. Michael Steele.  And not just by mouth-breathing morons on Facebook and Twitter.

MSNBC talk show host Lawrence O’Donnell, and Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va, among other prominent white liberals, consider themselves qualified to decide who is "authentically black."  Racism is never funny.  But if it ever were, this would be hilarious.

The blackness of black liberals such as comedian Bill Cosby and CNN talk show host Don Lemon was questioned after they spoke up for traditional values.

A panel assembled by MSNBC talk show host Melissa Harris-Perry mocked the Christmas photo of Mitt and Ann Romney with their 23 grandchildren, because Kieran, adopted by son Josh and his wife, is black.

They laughed as actress Pia Glenn sang: "One of these things is not like the others."   The picture "really sums up the diversity of the Republican party," said panelist Dean Obeidallah.

That’s the other half of the narrative.  Black conservatives aren’t really black.  And white Republicans are closet racists who only pretend to tolerate them.

Mocking the Romneys for having a black grandchild was "the height of hypocrisy and racial intolerance," Crystal Wright, who is black, wrote in the British newspaper, the Guardian.

Journalists had mocked Mr. Romney’s running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis, for having a black girlfriend in college, she recalled.

Regressive racism is fueled by political expediency. About 30 percent of blacks are conservative, but two thirds of them vote the way black liberals do, out of racial solidarity, said University of Texas Prof. Tasha Philpot in a 2012 paper.  If they voted their beliefs, the Democrat party would be on life support.

In exchange for their extraordinary loyalty, blacks have gotten disintegrating families, terrible inner city schools, sky high unemployment, a median income which during the Obama administration has fallen three times as much as it has for whites.

"The Black community has been taken advantage of, and used as pawns," said "Race Traitor."

Democrats "groom us to vote for them, then turn their backs on us," said Wayne Dupree.  "Like an abused spouse, we sit and take it."

"I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more, if only they knew they were slaves." said Harriet Tubman (1820-1913).

Black conservatives "aren’t traitors to our race," said Mr. Dupree, a graphic designer and Air Force veteran who is CEO of  But "we’ve stopped drinking the kool-aid…If only Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman were here now to stand with Allen West, Carson and Sowell."

Jack Kelly is a former Marine and Green Beret and a former deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force in the Reagan administration. He is national security writer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
